What actually falls under Miscellaneous
Class 9 is the deliberate catch-all for hazards that don't fit the other eight classes' definitions, which makes it the most consequential class for modern e-commerce despite the generic name: lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries, dry ice, magnetized material, and environmentally hazardous substances (marine pollutants) all sit here. Batteries alone generate more classification traffic through Classify7 than any other single topic, because the class splits sharply by configuration rather than chemistry — a standalone lithium-ion cell (UN3480) is cargo-aircraft-only on every major carrier, while the identical cell packed with or contained in its equipment (UN3481) ships on ordinary passenger-network terms. Seventeen entries are encoded, the most of any class, reflecting how much of the parcel hazmat problem in e-commerce is actually a Class 9 problem wearing a different product's name.
