What Classify7 is
Classify7 determines whether a product meets the criteria of a hazard class under 49 CFR 173, and where it does, returns the UN number, proper shipping name, hazard class and division, packing group, labels and special provisions from an encoded subset of the 49 CFR 172.101 Hazardous Materials Table, reconciled against the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations and the IMDG Code. It also reports the published acceptance position of UPS, FedEx, USPS and Amazon FBA.
What it is not
Classify7 is not the shipper of record, the carrier, or a competent authority. Under 49 CFR 172.101 the duty to classify and describe a hazardous material correctly rests with the person who offers it for transport, and nothing here transfers that duty. A determination is a decision aid, not a clearance.
Carrier positions encode each carrier’s published default as at the ruleset date. Tariffs change more often than regulations, and a contracted shipper may hold terms that differ. A carrier’s own acceptance decision governs, always.
Scope of the ruleset
The entry table is a curated subset covering the substances and articles that appear in commercial parcel, e-commerce and fulfilment shipping — not all of the roughly 3,000 entries in the Hazardous Materials Table. Where nothing matches, Classify7 returns needs_reviewand says so. An absent match means “not encoded”. It never means “safe to ship as general cargo”, and treating it that way is a misuse of the service.
Where a determination depends on a measured property (a flash point, a concentration, a watt-hour rating), Classify7asks for it rather than assuming a value. Supplying an inaccurate figure produces an inaccurate determination; the accuracy of the inputs is the customer’s responsibility.
Certificates
A signed classification certificate records what Classify7 returned for a given input at a given time, under a stated ruleset version and hash. It attests to the determination and its provenance. It is not a regulatory approval, a competent authority classification, an EX approval, or a carrier acceptance, and it does not certify that the information supplied to produce it was correct.
Availability and billing
The free tier is one classification per rolling day and is offered without warranty of availability. Paid plans are billed monthly in advance with metered usage above the included allowance, charged in arrears. Usage above the allowance is metered rather than blocked, so a catalogue import is never interrupted mid-run. Subscriptions can be cancelled at any time and run to the end of the paid period.
Liability
Classify7 is provided as is. To the extent permitted by law, liability arising from use of the service is limited to the fees paid in the twelve months preceding the claim. Fines, carrier penalties, rejected consignments and remediation costs arising from a shipment are not recoverable from Classify7.
